   READING RECOVERY PROGRAMME AT PUKERUA BAY SCHOOL

An Introduction to our Reading Recovery Teacher Kate O'Donnell

I have been teaching since 1991, mainly as a junior teacher.  I joined Pukerua Bay School in 2004 as the New Entrant teacher.  I have taught Reading Recovery before, training initially in Exeter in the UK in 1999.  I have taught Reading Recovery at Ngati Toa School in Titahi Bay during 2003.  Reading Recovery is a very exciting and rewarding teaching job and I was very enthusiastic about returning to it this year.  Reading Recovery helps children sort out any reading or writing confusion and make accelerated progress towards their expected goals. 

What is Reading Recovery? 

"Reading Recovery is an effective early literacy intervention designed to significantly reduce the number of children with literacy difficulties in schools."

"Reading Recovery provides daily one to one teaching with a specially trained teacher for children making the slowest progress in literacy learning after a year at school."

"It is supplementary to classroom instruction." 

Reading Recovery Teachers –

Are experienced junior class teachers who receive a year long training to deliver intense one to one instruction to six year old children.

There will be four places on the Reading Recovery programme this year as we have a teacher re-training.

 The Reading Recovery Programme at Pukerua Bay School 

The Reading Recovery room is situated next to Te Motu off the courtyard.  It is a special environment that is quiet and colorful to enable the children to concentrate on their intensive lesson.

Reading Recovery lessons run from 9 until 11.20 every day Monday to Friday at half hour intervals, not including morning tea break.

We are expecting that between 8 and 10 children will pass through Reading Recovery in 2010.

We are very enthusiastic about the benefits of Reading Recovery at Pukerua Bay and have been very lucky to re-train an already experienced reading recovery teacher.

Reading Recovery is a fantastic programme that can have life changing outcomes for these children who go on to the programme.  The accelerant progress leads to a sense of confidence and great achievement in young children.
